Your Heart Wants What It Wants

The heart wants what it wants…

This is a popular song by Selena Gomez. Every time I hear it, though, it makes me think of some of my past relationships.  Have you ever been attracted to someone you knew was not right for you, but you just couldn’t help yourself?  There was something about that person that drew you in.  It could be a physical attraction so strong that your heart skips a beat when they walk into the room or the thrill you get just by hearing their voice.  A simple text message can give you a euphoric high and put a big smile on your face.  It’s an endorphin rush.  Once you experience it, you crave more.  You can’t let it go.

As the song suggestsBut I’m not alive until you call, And I’ll bet the odds against it all”, you don’t feel alive until you hear from that person.  Being alive can be equated to that wonderful feeling of being in love with the moment.  Craving that feeling and waiting for it can be literal torture! The fear of the unknown gives you an adrenaline rush as well.  When you are waiting to hear from that person, you may start to have doubts.  You wonder what they are doing.  Are they still into you? When will you see them again? Is it wrong to continue dating someone that you have doubts if it’s meant to be? There might be an age difference or you both are from totally different backgrounds.   Is there something about the person that makes you question whether or not you could have a long-lasting relationship with them? Do your heart and your mind have conflicting emotions? Should you try to turn off those emotions and move on or live in the moment and enjoy what feels good right now. If you aren’t sure which path to take, pay attention to what your body is trying to tell you.  It is a powerful communicator.

We all love passion and romance initially, but what keeps couples together is honesty, communication, respect, and compromise,  among other things.  You have to be willing to put in the work it takes for a strong, lasting relationship.  If you both aren’t committed, it’s bound to fail.  In my younger days, I searched for someone I imagined spending the rest of my life with.  Being married and having a family was my goal.   If there wasn’t that heart-pounding attraction for me, the relationship ended after a couple of dates.  Even if your heart is all in, you usually know deep down if it’s right or not.   There are times when your mind says no, but your heart says yes.  Your heart wants what it wants and usually, the heart wins out.   If your intuition tries to tell you what you don’t want to hear, you may choose to ignore the warning signs.  The red flags are that tight feeling in your gut or an uneasy feeling.  That’s the universe telling you through your own guidance system that there may be a problem or you should change course.  The universe is always looking out for you.  I married someone even though I had those doubts and had the warning signs.  My heart won.  Although I have no regrets, I wonder how different my life would have been had I listened to my instincts.

Following your heart means taking risks.  For some people, the thought of getting hurt stops them dead in their tracks.  If you close your heart to love, you could be missing out on a deeply fulfilling relationship.  You will never know unless you take a chance.  Isn’t it better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all?

I plan on living in the moment and making the most out of every day.  I’m not waiting for happiness to happen.  Now that I’m getting older and have faced so many obstacles along the way, I’ve decided to enjoy the journey, even if it means loving and losing.  My goal is to experience many new firsts and live life to the fullest.  I will listen to my intuition, but if it doesn’t work out the way I had hoped, I know I will be just fine.    I’m looking for that person that is willing to enjoy the ride with me for as long and far as it takes us.  It may not be forever.  Who even knows how long forever is?  It could be next week or decades later.  I want to travel and see the world.  I want to laugh more.  I appreciate all the new friends I’m making and cherish the old friendships that have stood the test of time.  When you are not sure which path to take, follow your intuition.  It will guide you where you need to go.

If you have been through heartbreak, it is best to heal from the experience and move on.  Wallowing in self-pity will only keep you stuck in suffering and unhappiness.  If you can pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and be open to love again, then you will surely find it.  Be grateful for all the blessings in your life.  In doing so, your heart and intuition will lead you to more blessings and joy.
